Coul became a MacKenzie home in 1560. The present house was built in about 1821 for the distinguished scientist Sir George Steuart Mackenzie, 7th Baronet of Coul, by Edinburgh architects Robert & Richard Dickinson.

Just north of Drumnadrochit, the ruins of Castle Urquhart date from the 13th to the 16th centuries. It was partially destroyed in the mid-17th century so as not to be used by Jacobites. The castle was one of the largest in Scotland.
